Type Locality and Naming

SE Tarim Basin. The Jinyanshan Fm was named by Feng Mingdao, Li Tiande et al. in 1981. The typical section is in Nieyazialak in Altun Mts., Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region). The Jinyanshan Fm is the upper formation of the Taxidaban Gr.

Synonym: (金雁山组)


Lithology and Thickness

It is dominated by grey-white, grey and black dolomite with abundant stromatolites. Lower part is composed of dolomite and stromatolite-bearing dolomite. Upper part has, in addition, calcareous dolomite with marl, marble and limestone interbeds. It is recorded as 1335 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with underlying Muzisayi Fm.

Upper contact

The top is unconformably overlain by the Luanshigou Fm.

Regional extent

SE Tarim Basin. It distributed basically around Taxidaban and Jinyan Mountain at Altun Mts., in the juncture between the Qinghai Province and the Xinjiang Province

Fossils

The abundant stromatolite taxa include Conophyton cylindricus, C. garganicum, C. lituum, Altunshanphyton altunshanense, A. capillaceum, Jinyanshanphyton jinyanshanense, Conicodominia jinyanshanensis, Baicalia unca, Stratifera multiconicula.


Age 

Schematic stratigraphic column assigns it to late Jixianian (late Calymmian).
